1) There is a password that I had to change because one day my brain hiccuped and I was just staring at the keyboard and I couldn't remember the end of it. So I set a new one, but occasionally when I log in *I still type the old password*. And them I'm like, "hey, that is not the password I am looking for anymore, but WHAT DID I JUST TYPE???" My fingers still know the password but my conscious brain definitely does not. DO NOT LIKE.

2) Read all of the new Seanan McGuire book (The Winter Long) in a day because I happened to have time that day. I know I have recced her books before but I really love this series and her writing in general. The first in this series is Rosemary and Rue, and they are kind of Dresden-files-esque except with fae instead of vampires and a fabulous female protagonist. If you just can't with urban fantasy (I admittedly don't read a lot of it myself), she's written stuff that's a little more sci fi under the pen name Mira Grant. I recently read Parasite and really enjoyed it.

3) A very old SG-1 ficlet of mine, like seriously from the stone age or something I swear, got recced a couple of places recently. Which was a very nice surprise, but the reason I mention it this. It's an old Catherine Langford/Ernest Littlefield fic so as you can imagine the total hit count across three posting platforms was … well, I don't actually know, but it was TINY I am sure. And it showed up one day with about ten new kudos on AO3 and then a few weeks later with several new LJ comments and I was like, "OMG THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE READING OLD SG-1 FIC OUT THERE!!! THAT IS SO COOL." Of course I still read old SG-1 fic so I do not know why this would be so surprising/exciting to me?? But it was. Lol.

4) Happy Friday! Anyone have any fun weekend plans? I think I have promised to take my children to get donuts in the morning. My life is very exciting. ;)

HAI THERE FANDOM I HAVE MISSED YOU. *clings*

Meant to post this earlier today, but eh, whatever. Let's go anyway! Anyone else around and feeling in the need of a dose of happy things? Because RL has been kicking my hiney around a little bit lately (not to worry, I am fine! Just ... you know how life can get like that sometimes) and I am in need of glee.

So. 1) Here are previous posts of glee for your perusal, because they have many pictures and commentfics and happy things that are worth looking through again.

And 2) what have you all been up to lately that is making you smile? Fannish or otherwise. Ficrecs, interesting meta, that hilarious thing your cat did yesterday that you haven't gotten around to sharing yet? Garden pictures (because mine has mostly been a bust this due to badly timed travel and outright neglect, so I would love to live vicariously)? New job, fun old job, nifty science discovery? Bring it! Happy Monday.

1. What is happening on the Lizzie Bennet Diaries twitter accounts? WHAT? Is this a Thing or are they just tormenting us? Someone needs to tell me so I do not get my hopes up.

2. Speaking of the LBD, I had been keeping up with Emma Approved - though I bailed in the middle of the last episode because of referred awkwardness. Actually, that's frequently how I feel about Emma in almost any incarnation tbh, so I've been pretty ambivalent about this series so far. Though I did watch parts of the 2009 BBC adaptation recently which I had never seen before and had the following observations: a) Romola Garai in the role of Emma could be Katee Sackhoff's long-lost sister, and b) I generally do not have any interest in Sherlock Holmes adaptations (I know, I am weird), but I might be convinced to try Elementary just because Jonny Lee Miller.

3. Speaking of Emma, though, here is a ficrec:

#knemma (6329 words) by Tulina
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Emma - Jane Austen
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: George Knightley/Emma Woodhouse
Characters: George Knightley, Emma Woodhouse
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fans & Fandom, Chatlogs, follows the plot of the novel, Female Character of Color

Emma W
you know, you set really high standards
for the men in my life
GK
What?
Emma W
I guess this is how Tom Hiddleston’s little sister feels
if he has one.
GK
I guess.

I laughed SO HARD at this, you guys. Fandom love with a big fat bow on top.

4. Which immediately lead me to re-reading this SG-1 fic which I've probably already recced 18 times or something already but whatever:

#sg1wedding (1312 words) by openended
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill
Characters: Sam Carter, Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c (SG-1), Vala Mal Doran, Cassandra Fraiser, Cameron Mitchell (SG-1), John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Twitter, Weddings, Humor, Snark, Team, autocorrect
Series: Part 5 of Advent Calendar 2012
Summary:

Politics hijacked their wedding into a big floofy interplanetary affair. So everyone takes to Twitter.

@stillalive: An Air Force general, a Jaffa leader, and a Tok’ra high council member walked into the bar.
@blewupasun: @stillalive is this the beginning of a joke or something that actually happened?

5. Also have been slowly re-reading all the Jojo fic. Because SG-1 nostalgia. And also because of lines like this:

Why blonde? Why did she have to be blonde? And hot? And smarter than him? Why? He *hated* blonde, hot, smart women. He'd freaking *married* the last one. (from Just Don't Eat the Cake) Hee.

6. Today I was actually taking some time to write some stuff and rather than working on either of the fics I meant to, I have written an insert scene for a fic I posted over four years ago that will never see the outside of my notebook and started a sequel for something else that I shouldn't have. Oops. Oh well. All words are good, right?

Here concludes this digest of my recent fannish life. *g*

If there is anyone out there who doesn't need a day of happy after the last couple of months, I'm not sure who it is. Anyway, I know I do!

So, flist, what's making you smile these days? New shows, old shows, pic spam, link spam, rec lists, comment fic, whatever. Fannishness not required - feel free to talk about your garden or your bathroom renovation or your nieces and nephews or anything you like. Books! I love books. Or that geeky science article you read lately that nobody else you talk to seems to care much about. Anything goes! Go forth. :)

1) Look! I am on twitter at tulipsntessers (my tumblr username wouldn't quite fit as a twitter handle, but I did the best I could). It has been suggested to me that my joining twitter may be a harbinger of the zombie apocalypse or something. If I cause the end of the world, I'm sorry, but I was clicking to too many individual twitter accounts per day and it was just getting annoying! My convenience is obviously more important than your zombie-free life. *nods*

2) Fic rec! [profile] a_loquita posted a lovely SG-1 fic yesterday. It's called Home on the Horizon, and it's a post-season 8 era Cassie POV fic with some Sam/Jack that makes me miss them all like crazy. It's a nice short read to kick off your Monday, so go take a look.

3) Tell me what to write, flist. I keep bouncing back and forth between my WIPs and I cannot make up my miiiiiiiiiind. Probably I should just finish this Fringe one I've got hanging around, because it is closest to done, but I am afraid of the middle section. Like, "I'm going to write it and then it will go awry and this will end up in the folder of things I can't figure out how to salvage" afraid. Yes, I have issues, but that's been established a long time ago, lol.

4) I think we need another post of glee or something. Commentfic meme? Recipe exchange? Hmm.
mrspollifax: (Default)
So I just pulled out the fic I didn't manage to finish for [profile] a_loquita & [profile] binkii822's birthday last year, and look:

When he calls her on Wednesday afternoon, a five-minute conversation wedged into the gap between one hostile meeting and another, he expects her to just say yes.

See? More telephones. Hahahahahahah. I'm kind of afraid to look at any of my other WIPs now.

In other news, [profile] a_loquita recently pointed out to me that this summer it will have been five years since Continuum came out. Which, okay, how has it been five years? But getting past that double-take moment - there should be fannish things to commemorate this, right? Promptathon, SG-1 meme, general nostalgic squee-age*? Yes? Someone tell me if this is happening somewhere.

Meanwhile, speaking of nostalgic squee-age, there is a general Gateverse promptathon thing (fic, art, etc.) going on through the end of May - on DW or on LJ.

* No, autocorrect, I do not mean squeegee. I do not admit to laughing at that substitution, either.

1) Most people I know have a complicated relationship with the internet. Like, yay, it's so cool that we have all this nifty stuff! Boo, I am so much better at wasting my time than I have ever been before! Yay, blogs about anything you can possibly think of! Boo, crazy people commenting on every blog you can possibly think of! etc etc. Sometimes I think, wow, I really need to just turn off the computer and walk away for a month or two. (Though we all know I'd never really be able to do that!!!)

But then the lights go out at the Superbowl, and reaction on social media ranges from Zombie apocalypse! to Oh, see, *now* people care about post-Katrina infrastructure to Don't blink!!!11. Y'all, society may or may not be heading to hell on an IP packet, but we are going to be really damn funny on the way if it is. *g*

2) Comm pimping: [livejournal.com profile] annerbhp just recently started up [community profile] the_lbd for all us Lizzie Bennet Diaries fanatics. Which was *excellent* timing as I had been wondering earlier that day if there was an LJ comm, but hadn't quite gotten around to looking for one yet. Come join in the fun!

3) Speaking of the internet, I spent part of this morning fixing mistakes in the last fic I posted. I was sort of in a hurry when I put it up (since the holiday season was waning pretty quickly and I wanted to slide in under the wire) and despite the best efforts of my beta, I kept messing with stuff on my own and well ... you know how that ends. Missing words, extra phrases, blah blah blah. But seriously, you guys, updating a fic that lives four different places is completely ridiculous (though it would only be three if I'd actually crossposted from dreamwidth to lj, I suppose). I still haven't edited the version on ff.net yet. I need to let go of one of these archives, and I suppose the logical thing to do is to stop actually posting on my journal and just link from there to the bigger archives but ... I am very attached to having my fic posted on my journal, and I need the dreamwidth backup of that, and and and. Idk. Fanfic problems, I haz them.

On a similar topic, what's the general feeling about linking fics on tumblr? Are people doing that? I have seen some people doing that. Seriously, I need another place to post links like I need a migraine or something, but so much of fandom seems to have moved that direction. Then again my tumblr has like 14 followers, and most of it is people from around here, so it all just seems silly. Here, let me show you my social media awkwardness ....

4) I really need another posting format besides numbered lists. Comic strip? Haiku? Interpretive dance? lol
mrspollifax: (anne)
I was thinking some quasi-thinky thoughts about modern science fiction and J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon and how as much as I love the messier stuff, I do sort of miss the old days when it was okay for at least some sci fi to be more idealistic and archetypal and just less dark and complicated. And I was thinking about posting about that, but it's Friday and the weather is cold and gross and idk, those thoughts are just way too heavy for today.

So instead I was looking again at this fabulous picspam that [profile] a_loquita posted for [personal profile] supplyship's birthday yesterday. And when I got to the cap of Castle and Beckett and the Nebula 9 set, I thought to myself, "Somebody should totally write the Space Cops AU for Castle! With aliens and space stations and ratty old falling-apart spaceships. She can still solve crimes in her fabulous high heels. Because it would be awesome."

Someone should write me a little bit of that in the comments. Really!! Or tell me about that AU you've secretly always wanted to read/write. Or rec your favorites. Those sorts of AUs seemed to be everywhere in the SGA McShep fandom a while back, but not as many in SG-1? Although having only just typed that sentence, I've already thought of four really good ones - at least two of which I know I have recced on this journal before - so maybe I'm wrong about that. Anyway. Fringe in Space? CSI Stargate? That Castle High School AU? Every fandom has a high school AU - there must be one out there already. *g*
mrspollifax: (fall)
Anyone else need a safe space? Because I live in a swing state and I absolutely do. Please distract me. *begs*  Or let me distract you.  Whatever works.  Picspam, fannish squee, your review of Cloud Atlas (because I tried to read the book and couldn't make it through, so I want to know how the movie works). Fic recs? Fic prompts? Commentfic? Your grandmother's recipe for coconut pie - or any other kind of pie, whatever. Politics/election-free zone, unless it's fictional (please feel free to bring along your C.J. Cregg love, for example).

Right now I'm going to make chicken soup. I have kale sprouts from thinning the garden to throw in at the end. Yum.
mrspollifax: (geekgirl)
Also, it is Monday, and not Thanksgiving where I am, and my state does not celebrate Columbus Day. So. Amuse me, or let me amuse you, however it works. *g*

Pick a character from one of my fandoms, and I shall tell you when I first fell in love with them. Or my first reaction to them (because honestly, who loves Senator Kinsey? I'm not setting myself up for something like that). Or some of my head-canon for that character. Or write you a drabble. Or something.

(Okay, so it's a little open-ended for a meme. Apparently I have commitment issues today!)
