ficrecs and other ways to pass the time

First, and most importantly, a ficrec. Because
a_loquita wrote me fic! Sam/Jack fic! Really fabulous Sam/Jack fic, though of course that is a given considering the source. *g* The fic is The Plan, and it is cabin fic (squee) and you should all go read it right now because it is wonderful. And also because I said so. ;)
Second, things teevee. I am watching exactly two shows at the moment, Fringe and Castle. I am caught up on both shows, and probably every thought I have has been said already by someone else, so I won't natter on. But I will say that both of these shows this season have confirmed my theory that two-part season openers work way better than single episodes. Or more accurately, that I really wish both shows had chosen to go with two-part openers this season. It helps avert the second-and-third-episode doldrums. But as of episode four, both are back in gear I think.
Also, flist, if you are not watching Fringe, or if you tried and had trouble getting through the first season, season four is actually proving to be a great place to jump in. And it is way less gross, lol. Seriously, Olivia Dunham is one of my favorite female characters ever on television - I mean, up there with Sam Carter and CJ Cregg, you guys. And I need more people to be watching this show so that it will get a fifth season.
Now, Sanctuary. Seriously, y'all, I need some convincing. Honest confession: I quit watching halfway through last season - I was feeling lackluster about it, and then they moved it to Monday and that was it. I haven't watched an episode since. At this point, I can't seem to work up any enthusiasm at all for getting back into it. Still love Amanda Tapping, of course, but the show is not pushing my buttons anymore and I can't figure out why. Anyone want to sell me on it?
And last, fic writing. Am totally geared up and really really wanting to write some Gateverse fic right now - but my brain keeps getting sucked in by the small universe of black holes otherwise known as my unfinished major Stargate fic projects. The ones that I still want to finish, but just plain do not have the writing chops to get done yet if you know what I mean. Too long, too plotty, too complicated, need to rewatch 15 episodes before I can do this one, etc etc etc. And every new idea I have I think, well, no, actually, that goes over here with this story, doesn't it? Or it might, so I shouldn't try to write it as its own story, because I might want it back later. I can't quite figure out how to cajole the brain out of this cycle short of deleting everything in my wip folder, and I'm not prepared to do that just yet. *frustrated*
That is all. This post totally reads like a grade school essay, compete with transition words. *g*

Date: 2011-10-13 03:06 pm (UTC)I've developed some mixed feelings about that axiom, though. I've written more than one fic totally into the ground by trying to just write my way out of being stuck ... once I've gone too far in the wrong direction, I can't get it untangled in my head. Sometimes things really do need to percolate - the trick I can't quite get is telling the difference between when I'm just not getting off the block, and when I really do need to let it all stew for a while. Writing is hard!! *g*
And thanks for the other link! I'll definitely have to check it out.

Date: 2011-10-13 03:20 pm (UTC)Script Frenzy was originally in February, but they moved it to April (I'm guessing to have 30 days) after the first time I heard about it. That worked better for me because in February I'd lose a whole weekend to a writers conference every year. Then again, in April, I lose time to Easter and other things, so it's probably six of one, half dozen of the other.
Writing ***IS*** hard. It ain't for sissies, that's a fact.
But...it's fun, too, right? :D

Date: 2011-10-13 03:26 pm (UTC)Had to look back for what I linked - mentalpause, you know... LOL
I will admit this...I don't love Sanctuary as much as I *want* to, but I love Amanda so much and I love seeing her all the time.
I don't gobble up Sanctuary fic the way I still look for SG-1 fic (especially Sam-centric or Sam/Jack). Maybe that's partly because I really don't know how to ship Helen; it's too confusing. And I do love to ship. I read
I'm not in love with Will - some days not even in "like" with Will. I *do* love Henry and Biggie (and the men who play them). I like Agam Darshi a lot, so I'm trying to like/love Kate.
Must get back to work!

Date: 2011-10-12 06:33 pm (UTC)I really tried to watch the premier of Sanctuary (power outage not-withstanding. That's what time-shifting is for), but I fell asleep a few minutes in. I know one of the main draws for me was the Ashley/Helen relationship, but that's gone, and they didn't quite get there with Kate, and... I just don't know. I keep trying to watch it but it never quite clicks for me either.
And pfffssst on the other stuff.(making seriously immature faces at your post does not translate well into text) I already emailed you about it. :)

Date: 2011-10-13 03:02 pm (UTC)I think they should have had Ashley and Kate. But of course it's not that kind of budget. Sad for us! But I agree, not having the Ashley & Helen mother/daughter thing at the center was a big loss. It's a side to Helen's character that just doesn't come out otherwise.

Date: 2011-10-12 08:16 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, Castle is definitely on track for sure, yay! Fringe is on my Netflix and I'm getting there....
As for Sanctuary? *sigh* Sadly, I can see your point. I'm still watching but hey, I don't have as limited of time as you do. I really think you'd like "Awakening" so you should definitely go back and watch that, Tesla and Helen banter is fab in that episode! I love to rewatch that one and laugh at them.
Overall, the problem is the inconsistency in the show. There are times that I'm not sure they know what they are doing (and in listening to Kindler in the commentaries, I suspect that's exactly the case. He's too eager to be like "Hey, this is cool! Let's try doing this! He's not an effective show runner with an overall feel for the entire show) They've been very inconsistent with character backstory and all, John Druitt in particular, and it makes me a little crazy. And now with this time travel in the premiere, IDEK. I can't get my head around it. But I know you love time travel and AUs and stuff like that so maybe you'll like it?

Date: 2011-10-13 02:16 pm (UTC)I will have to go check out that episode in particular, since you say so and I trust you. *g* I hope that with the shorter season there will be less of those 'filler' episodes this season, which were the ones that lost me, but honestly I have no idea what is going on right now and that is a problem. I need the Glee-esque 'here's what you missed on Sanctuary' summary or something!

Date: 2011-10-12 09:54 pm (UTC)For me, I'm most disappointed with the way the Helen/Druitt relationship has gone. I've said it elsewhere and I've said it a dozen times, I miss evil, cruel, Jack-the-Ripper Druitt. This whiny, pine after Helen thing is grating.
Right now I'm watching: Fringe, Castle, Dexter (an excellent show - writing/acting/directing is amazing IMO), The Office...and...I think Psych comes back tonight which, with the Office, helps balance my angst levels LOL (because my other guilty pleasure is Parenthood and that tips me off into the angsty deep end).

Date: 2011-10-13 02:02 pm (UTC)Ah, Psych! I used to watch Psych, too, but that one sort of lost me last season, too. Mostly because my Tivo filled up when I wasn't paying attention and so I missed a bunch of episodes. Again, my watching TV in order OCD in effect! I'll catch up someday.

Date: 2011-10-12 11:18 pm (UTC)If we held you to that standard, you might hold us to it too, and that would be BAD.
Don't you DARE jettison any Gateverse W.I.P.s!... Please?
[wanders off happily contemplating Gatefic tomorrow, while misquoting the Queen of Hearts. "Gatefic yesterday, Gatefic tomorrow, but it's never Gatefic today!"]

Date: 2011-10-13 01:45 pm (UTC)And not to worry, I am very reluctant with the 'delete forever' button. I am much more likely to move things into 'never look at me again' folders so that they won't distract me ... and then I can occasionally glance at them (in defiance of my own rules) and realize, yes, I actually *am* better at writing than I used to be. *cringe* :)

Date: 2011-10-17 02:54 am (UTC)It's very frustrating, because I like being able to drag people into things with me.
On the other hand, I'm pretty happy gleeing about the things I DO like with other fans. So, yeah.
I need to go catch up on Fringe and Castle now.

Date: 2011-10-17 12:32 pm (UTC)Yeah, I stuck with it as long as I did because most of my Stargate flist was watching. I mean, you go to all this trouble to find clever, interesting people with clever, interesting opinions who are fun to chat with and then your show has the nerve to go and end! :P Silly teevee, not accommodating me. *g*
Anyway, I may get back to it again, who knows!
I need to go catch up on Fringe and Castle now
Yes yes! You should!

Date: 2011-10-22 03:21 am (UTC)And really, where did you find those clever, interesting people? *g*
Seriously, though, it's really strange how people come to and leave various fandoms. Fandom migration patterns--now that's a good grad school study. :-) (So much for serious.)
