2014 fic list

Let Your Demons Run. 2/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Adult; ~6000 words. Post-Entity. There can't be that many eyes in the building that haven't noticed her. (on lj)

Most Everyone is Mad Here. 3/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack, Cassie Fraiser; Teen; ~2500 words. When Jack opens the door to find Cassie standing on his front porch, loaded down with a cat and an outlandish amount of stuff, his first thought is something like What the hell? Sequel of sorts to Nine Lives or Thereabouts. (on lj).

Ghosts That We Knew. 7/2014. Fringe; Peter Bishop/Olivia Dunham, Elizabeth Bishop/Walter Bishop, Phillip Broyles, Astrid Farnsworth; Teen; ~12,000 words. There are infinite ways to get from the past to the present. What if things went a little differently back when Peter and Olivia first met as children? AU starting at the time of Subject 13.

Noel. 12/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill, Cassie Fraiser, Vala Mal Doran, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, Cam Mitchell; ~4700 words. Sam thinks that's the sort of thing someone might have mentioned to her in any of the sixteen or so emails they'd sent her in the last twenty-four hours. Hey, Sam, we’re taking over your house Christmas Eve. Hope that’s okay. Love and kisses, SG-1. (on lj)

So I finished four things this year, which is more than the three of the year before at least? Though actually, I think it's my second highest year for total word count in terms of what I finished and posted. Fewer things, but longer things, which is the trend for my writing at the moment. General rambling rather than the question list, because four is still not enough to do the meme questions, really.

So the single most frustrating thing in my fic folder right now is this:

Jack's working on the roof when she roars up his drive, gunning that bike she won't give up no matter how infrequently she gets to use it. He watches as she pulls to a halt and hops down, tugging off her helmet to reveal the hair she's cropped short once again. She takes a step back, then a few more, shading her eyes to squint up at him against the late afternoon sun.

"Wind?" she asks.

"Hail," he calls back down. "Last week."

"Bad?"

He stares along his roof ridge. It had been pretty bad, in point of fact, a mother of a spring storm that had cracked the hell out of his shingles and made the dog hide under the bed, shaking like a leaf. But Jack just shrugs. "You know."

Even from his high perch, he can see the half-grin that quirks up the corner of her mouth. And it's not a great stretch to imagine what she's thinking.
Do you think maybe you've been in Minnesota too long, sir? You've forgotten how to complain properly.

Though she'd be leaving off the sir, these days.

"Want some help?" she offers.

"Nah." He peers up at the sun. "Take your stuff on in. I'll be down in twenty."

Because I really like it, and it was the beginning to something that had, like, a plot and stuff? I remember that it was a late-series AU, and Jack had retired but was occasionally consulting for the Pentagon, and Sam was still doing … something. And there was some intrigue going on that Jack did not yet know about and then all the problems I cannot remember anymore had to be solved. It really isn't from all that long ago - like last winter - but THAT IS ALL I REMEMBER. I wrote this and notes for/bits of the next few scenes and then I guess life interrupted me before I made the rest of the notes? If I've worked on something for at least a week or so I can usually remember enough even if I was dumb and didn't note stuff down, but this was just a day or two as far as I can tell. The fact that I did know what it was intended to be is very clear, of course. THAT I remember. Bah humbug.

I should really just delete it so I will stop coming back and making ugly faces at it. But I am saaaaad.

Anyway. You should all share with me the frustrating things in your writing/art/whatever folders/notebooks because then I will feel better. Or at least I will have company. :)

1) It's been the kind of week where I drag out the Christmas writing playlist and start outlining Christmas fic BECAUSE. What do you mean it is only September? Bah. I don't care.

2) Also the kind of week where I spent a little time looking through the seriously way back archives on my hard drive and WHOA. I ended up lost somewhere in 2008 and those unfinished fics and bits and pieces of brainstorming are so bad they are hysterical. Every now and then I found a gem of a paragraph or three that made me go, "Oh hey! There is actually some hope for you, earlier me!!" But for the most part, just, bwahahahahaha.

3) I have temporarily abandoned my annual West Wing rewatch because it was only September and I had already watched two Thanksgiving episodes and two Christmas episodes (I skipped Noel) and that just didn't seem right. I realize this is totally in conflict with #1 above, but whatever. Instead I watched Full Alert and Lost City and Fallen/Homecoming (no idea why I went in that order? Reversal of the space time continuum or something).

Castle premiere appears to finally be coming on Monday - haven't decided whether to watch it or make a-loquita watch it first and tell me whether I should?

I don't actually know what else I am watching this fall.

4) Okay, I am ready to go on record about what my actual real-live problem with tumblr is. Nobody talks to me over there? That sounds so whiny when I say it, like ME ME ME FANDOM PAY ATTENTION TO ME!! lol. But seriously, I cannot tell if other people are just all talking behind the scenes or what. Somebody needs to explain this to me, because either I am too old, or too introverted, or just missing the social conventions due to my usual cluelessness about such things. I miss the interesting fannish conversations. Not that I have been that good at holding up my end of them lately, but still.

5) I need drabble prompts or three-sentence fic prompts or something. My brain is stuck in park due to long writing hiatus. Prompts may not help (because sometimes they really don't) but they might? Maybe? Anyway if anyone is interested. :)
mrspollifax: (coffee)
Okay, the last time I tried anything that sounded like "prompt me for things," I immediately ended up with that horrible cold crud everyone got over Christmas and was too sick and tired to do anything but watch old USA gymnastics meets for a couple of weeks. (I still feel guilty for abandoning that meme, btw.) So maybe this is a bad idea, but a) I keep wanting to post things but then I go to post and can never remember what? and b) the two things I have been writing lately are kind of at a trying-to-unwind-a-complicated-thematic-problem sort of place and not ready to move forward just yet.

Anyway, leave me a fandom w/character/pairing and a prompt (or give me some choices because that never hurts?) and maybe I will do the three-sentence fic thing. Or drabbles. If all else fails I will rec you things or link you to tumblr posts.

1. What is happening on the Lizzie Bennet Diaries twitter accounts? WHAT? Is this a Thing or are they just tormenting us? Someone needs to tell me so I do not get my hopes up.

2. Speaking of the LBD, I had been keeping up with Emma Approved - though I bailed in the middle of the last episode because of referred awkwardness. Actually, that's frequently how I feel about Emma in almost any incarnation tbh, so I've been pretty ambivalent about this series so far. Though I did watch parts of the 2009 BBC adaptation recently which I had never seen before and had the following observations: a) Romola Garai in the role of Emma could be Katee Sackhoff's long-lost sister, and b) I generally do not have any interest in Sherlock Holmes adaptations (I know, I am weird), but I might be convinced to try Elementary just because Jonny Lee Miller.

3. Speaking of Emma, though, here is a ficrec:

#knemma (6329 words) by Tulina
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Emma - Jane Austen
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: George Knightley/Emma Woodhouse
Characters: George Knightley, Emma Woodhouse
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fans & Fandom, Chatlogs, follows the plot of the novel, Female Character of Color
Summary:

Emma W
you know, you set really high standards
for the men in my life
GK
What?
Emma W
I guess this is how Tom Hiddleston’s little sister feels
if he has one.
GK
I guess.

I laughed SO HARD at this, you guys. Fandom love with a big fat bow on top.

4. Which immediately lead me to re-reading this SG-1 fic which I've probably already recced 18 times or something already but whatever:

#sg1wedding (1312 words) by openended
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill
Characters: Sam Carter, Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c (SG-1), Vala Mal Doran, Cassandra Fraiser, Cameron Mitchell (SG-1), John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Twitter, Weddings, Humor, Snark, Team, autocorrect
Series: Part 5 of Advent Calendar 2012
Summary:

Politics hijacked their wedding into a big floofy interplanetary affair. So everyone takes to Twitter.

@stillalive: An Air Force general, a Jaffa leader, and a Tok’ra high council member walked into the bar.
@blewupasun: @stillalive is this the beginning of a joke or something that actually happened?

5. Also have been slowly re-reading all the Jojo fic. Because SG-1 nostalgia. And also because of lines like this:

Why blonde? Why did she have to be blonde? And hot? And smarter than him? Why? He *hated* blonde, hot, smart women. He'd freaking *married* the last one. (from Just Don't Eat the Cake) Hee.

6. Today I was actually taking some time to write some stuff and rather than working on either of the fics I meant to, I have written an insert scene for a fic I posted over four years ago that will never see the outside of my notebook and started a sequel for something else that I shouldn't have. Oops. Oh well. All words are good, right?

Here concludes this digest of my recent fannish life. *g*
mrspollifax: (Default)
Yes, it is February, and yes, I only posted three fics last year. But I am doing this anyway! :)

2013 fic list

The Larks Still Bravely Singing Fly. 1/2013. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack, also with Cassie, Daniel, Teal'c, Vala, Cam, etc etc; Teen; ~11,000 words. Because that's what you do if you're The Man. When you send men and women out to take the risks you're no longer taking yourself, you'd better damn well keep the light burning at home. (on ao3)

Postcards from Home. 2/2013. Lizzie Bennet Diaries; Fitz Williams/Brandon; All Ages; ~800 words. Fitz and Brandon, right after the final Domino vid. Fluff, basically. (on ao3)

Rosemary for Remembrance. 7/2013. Stargate SG-1; Vala Mal Doran/Daniel Jackson; Teen; ~2400 words. It comes every morning, relentless and remorseless, hovering just at the point where sleeping meets waking. A moment of temptation when, if she wants, she can use her senses as if they were still her own. Vala after the events of Continuum. Written for the five-year anniversary of Continuum.(on ao3)

I'm not going to bother with the questions because it's a lot less fun with only three things to choose from.

That being said, I was pleased with Rosemary for Remembrance because hey, I actually finished something that could be classified as Daniel/Vala, because while I loved them on screen, I've always run into a brick wall when I tried to get them into words myself. And I love Vala and all her many complicated sides.

Postcards from home is just a tiny ficlet but it is nice occasionally to prove to myself I can write something that isn't related to Stargate. :)

And Larks is my favorite thing I've written. Not necessarily the best, but my own personal favorite. I got my head good and stuck in the fic-verse and couldn't write much of anything else for a while afterwards, lol.

And I think that is all!

So I just pulled out the fic I didn't manage to finish for [profile] a_loquita & [profile] binkii822's birthday last year, and look:

When he calls her on Wednesday afternoon, a five-minute conversation wedged into the gap between one hostile meeting and another, he expects her to just say yes.

See? More telephones. Hahahahahahah. I'm kind of afraid to look at any of my other WIPs now.

In other news, [profile] a_loquita recently pointed out to me that this summer it will have been five years since Continuum came out. Which, okay, how has it been five years? But getting past that double-take moment - there should be fannish things to commemorate this, right? Promptathon, SG-1 meme, general nostalgic squee-age*? Yes? Someone tell me if this is happening somewhere.

Meanwhile, speaking of nostalgic squee-age, there is a general Gateverse promptathon thing (fic, art, etc.) going on through the end of May - on DW or on LJ.

* No, autocorrect, I do not mean squeegee. I do not admit to laughing at that substitution, either.
mrspollifax: (Default)
Fic first lines meme! Most recently seen with [personal profile] ziparumpazoo. This was both hilarious and cringe-inducing. Oh, man, do I struggle with fic openings. I think this is 20 of them, arranged into self-mocking helpful categories. *g*

abandon all hope and all that jazz )

I want to see other people's now so that I can learn to do it better. You know you want tooooooooo.

Tangentially, coming back to fanfic after spending a while reading novels instead is an exercise in "omg the present tense everywhere I cannot grok!!!" Which is not to say I do not love present tense - because I do, or I would not write so much of it, lol - but going from past tense mostly in first person (seriously, is every new novel written in first person now?) to third person present requires a non-trivial mental shift, apparently.

Requisite end-of-year fic roundup.

2012 fic list

What's Next. 2/2012. Stargate SG-1/The West Wing; various characters and pairings; Teen; ~4000 words. Five conversations about the Stargate Program that happened at the White House. (on ao3)

Theme and Variations. 3/2012. Fringe; Ella, with Olivia, Rachel, Peter, Astrid, Walter, and a handful of others; Teen; ~11,000 words. Five times Ella Dunham said goodbye. (on ao3)

On the Bridge at Midnight. 6/2012. Fringe; Phillip Broyles and Nina Sharp; Teen; ~850 words. Two old soldiers in a brave new world. (on ao3)

Once and Future. 8/2012. Stargate SG-1; Hailey and Satterfield; Teen; ~500 words. A passing moment in the greater history of Stargate Command. (on ao3)

Sesquicentennial. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack friendship/UST; All Ages; ~550 words. "Carter, are you sure we’re up high enough? I’m really not in the mood to go swimming today." (on ao3)

Fading Light. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack UST; Teen; ~900 words. Missing scene from Secrets, before Sam, Jack, and Hammond go back to the SGC. (on ao3)

Castles in the Sky. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Mature; ~900 words. Touching her still seems like a dream sometimes. (on ao3)

Nine Lives or Thereabouts. 11/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; All Ages; ~900 words. Is that an alien living in their house, maybe? (on ao3)

The Preservation of Cultural Heritage. 12/2012. Fringe; Astrid Farnsworth and Walter Bishop; All Ages; ~700 words. The first box arrives on Wednesday afternoon. (on ao3)

Look Again Into Your Heart. 12/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Mature; ~7000 words. It's not that cold, not by the standard of some of the places she's been in the last decade or so of her life, but then again, she's not used to braving the weather in heels and an evening dress. (on ao3)

I also did that three-sentence meme that was floating around for a while, and discovered that mostly I have some trouble counting to three. Teal'c and Vala, Sam/Jack, Castle/Beckett, Vala and Olivia Dunham, Daniel and Vala. What's with all the Vala in the prompts, you guys? *g*

And I posted this little bit of commentfic (Jack O'Neill and Charlie Kawalsky, pre-series) that was meant to be part of a larger five-things sort of story that I've basically abandoned. It needs the context of the other things to be less … abrasive, I think, so I haven't put it up anywhere else. But I like it for the Jack and Kawalsky banter. (Though there is a place where two sentences got munged together somehow and some other stuff that I didn't notice till it was too late to edit. So just ignore all that, lol.)

Undusting the writing brain. Also, y'all, I have been chasing down my Stargate muse. I may have actually seen her around once or twice recently. Tumblr is like chocolate for muses (and also like a rabbit hole I get lost down occasionally, but that's a different story). So many pretty gifs and pictures and now I have had to rewatch bits of several season 4 episodes and I am in over my head in flaily flaily Sam/Jack glee completely out of nowhere. No words to speak of yet, but hey, who knows!

Anyway. I think I saw this one most recently with [livejournal.com profile] anr.

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I'll give you between one and three sentences from that story.

Just stick with the pairings/people you know I'll actually write, pretty please. *g*

Because I actually posted enough fic this year to bother. Barely, and only because of a strong fourth quarter effort. ;)

First, and most importantly, a ficrec. Because [livejournal.com profile] a_loquita wrote me fic! Sam/Jack fic! Really fabulous Sam/Jack fic, though of course that is a given considering the source. *g* The fic is The Plan, and it is cabin fic (squee) and you should all go read it right now because it is wonderful. And also because I said so. ;)

Second, things teevee. And other stuff I shall ramble about under here .... )
mrspollifax: (fringe)
Wondering if posting to my journal will actually work now? Here goes nothing.

I'm going to have a couple of my favorite fangirls where they can't escape my evil plan at my disposal in the near future, and I thought I might get them hooked on introduce them to my latest teevee obsession Fringe. But it's not the sort of gathering where we can just sit and watch for hours on end - I need a targeted approach for this. So here's what I'm wondering. If you were to pick three episodes of Fringe that could demonstrate the supreme awesomeness of Olivia Dunham -- oops, I mean the Fringe-verse -- what would you pick? Preferably without giving away the whole game, but then again, I've discovered that at least one of them knows some pretty hefty spoilers about the show's premise. So maybe that's not an issue?

In other news, apparently I can still finish fics. Or at least drafts of them. That's a relief. I was beginning to wonder .... :)

ETA: And hey! Apparently I missed this altogether, through a combination of the LJ stuff, RL busy-ness, and not realizing I didn't have the comm on my regular reading list (woe). But it seems [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree is running a ficathon this year! Right now! They've closed for prompts but just opened up claiming, and if you don't like one of this year's prompts, you can still use the ones from the previous ficathons. And we all know how much fun Stargate and the end of the world can be! Thought I'd pass it on in case anyone else is clueless like me.
mrspollifax: (sam fanfic)
So wayyyyyyy back before the end-of-year holidays, [livejournal.com profile] ziparumpazoo was asking people this question; and since a) I didn't write enough in 2010 to merit doing a fic-year-in-review post, and b) I am really curious about other people's answers (with the added benefit that it might give me a shortcut to catching up on some of the fic I know I have missed *g*), I am declaring it a meme and answering it here.

What are, in your opinion, your three best pieces of work? Not the most popular, or the most fun to write, but the three stories you've written that, once finished, you've stepped back and thought that yes, this is exactly how it was supposed to turn out?

So, here are mine:

click here for navel pondering )

Anyone else want to give it a go for their fic list?

--

In a similar vein I've been thinking about making up an 'interview yourself about your WIPs' meme ... e.g., 'What's the oldest WIP on your current hard drive?' and/or similar questions. Usually I have the slightly-superstitious attitude that if I talk about my WIPs in public it is absolutely sure to kill them, but since they aren't getting finished anyway, maybe I've got it backwards? Hee. But the problem is that I can't seem to make up my mind if what I am looking for is a motivational intervention or an exorcism. Maybe what I really need is a finish-a-ficathon. Or possibly a ficamnesty day? Hmm.
mrspollifax: (Default)
Because it cannot be said enough, my beta readers are the bestest. I am a whiny brat some days, but for some reason they put up with me anyway. Plus they are very, very smart. :)

And now I will talk about me a lot (so that I can come back to this next year and wonder what on earth I was thinking).

Book meme! I actually did this the other day but hadn't gotten around to posting it yet. Seen a bunch of places.

meme here! )

In things totally unrelated, last night I started trying to bring some order to the chaos that is the fic-writing portion of my hard drive. It's less that the folders aren't organized – I have a system, although I suspect it wouldn't look like a system to anyone but me, and I usually follow it, except when I'm in a hurry to save something – and more that I have so many unfinished fics and bits of fic that when I'm feeling uninspired, I just bounce around from one unfinished project to the next and basically make no progress.

Anyway, now I have a spreadsheet! With word counts and notes and file links and copious self-snarking and blaming of other people, hehe. It already has an intimidating amount of entries, and I'm not actually done adding stuff yet, but it is much easier now to navigate the jungle. *feels accomplished*

(Also I am not starting anything new until I finish some of these, or at least consign a few of them to the folder of death. I am not.)

So I have this one fic that's almost done, and then I have a bunch of other stuff that's in what I've come, in fannish mommy fashion, to call Fic Timeout. Yes, the place where misbehaving fics go until I'm less likely to damage them in my zeal to fix whatever problem they are having, lol.

Thus. Writing meme.

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Or I'll take in the middle, because there are sort of large time gaps in a couple of things I've written. Fic list is here.

(Also I'm doing this as a public service, because [livejournal.com profile] a_loquita said she'd do it if I did. *g*)

I'm feeling all organized, because I just posted my very first LJ fic index. Said spurt of organization is the direct result of several days in a row of me and my family being sick, which has generally left me sitting on the couch feeling too muzzy-headed to write or read productively. My house is a disaster, but look, my fic is all orderly, or at least more orderly than it was yesterday.
