2014 fic list

Let Your Demons Run. 2/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Adult; ~6000 words. Post-Entity. There can't be that many eyes in the building that haven't noticed her. (on lj)

Most Everyone is Mad Here. 3/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack, Cassie Fraiser; Teen; ~2500 words. When Jack opens the door to find Cassie standing on his front porch, loaded down with a cat and an outlandish amount of stuff, his first thought is something like What the hell? Sequel of sorts to Nine Lives or Thereabouts. (on lj).

Ghosts That We Knew. 7/2014. Fringe; Peter Bishop/Olivia Dunham, Elizabeth Bishop/Walter Bishop, Phillip Broyles, Astrid Farnsworth; Teen; ~12,000 words. There are infinite ways to get from the past to the present. What if things went a little differently back when Peter and Olivia first met as children? AU starting at the time of Subject 13.

Noel. 12/2014. Stargate SG-1; Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill, Cassie Fraiser, Vala Mal Doran, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, Cam Mitchell; ~4700 words. Sam thinks that's the sort of thing someone might have mentioned to her in any of the sixteen or so emails they'd sent her in the last twenty-four hours. Hey, Sam, we’re taking over your house Christmas Eve. Hope that’s okay. Love and kisses, SG-1. (on lj)

So I finished four things this year, which is more than the three of the year before at least? Though actually, I think it's my second highest year for total word count in terms of what I finished and posted. Fewer things, but longer things, which is the trend for my writing at the moment. General rambling rather than the question list, because four is still not enough to do the meme questions, really.

Okay, the last time I tried anything that sounded like "prompt me for things," I immediately ended up with that horrible cold crud everyone got over Christmas and was too sick and tired to do anything but watch old USA gymnastics meets for a couple of weeks. (I still feel guilty for abandoning that meme, btw.) So maybe this is a bad idea, but a) I keep wanting to post things but then I go to post and can never remember what? and b) the two things I have been writing lately are kind of at a trying-to-unwind-a-complicated-thematic-problem sort of place and not ready to move forward just yet.

Anyway, leave me a fandom w/character/pairing and a prompt (or give me some choices because that never hurts?) and maybe I will do the three-sentence fic thing. Or drabbles. If all else fails I will rec you things or link you to tumblr posts.

Yes, it is February, and yes, I only posted three fics last year. But I am doing this anyway! :)

2013 fic list

The Larks Still Bravely Singing Fly. 1/2013. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack, also with Cassie, Daniel, Teal'c, Vala, Cam, etc etc; Teen; ~11,000 words. Because that's what you do if you're The Man. When you send men and women out to take the risks you're no longer taking yourself, you'd better damn well keep the light burning at home. (on ao3)

Postcards from Home. 2/2013. Lizzie Bennet Diaries; Fitz Williams/Brandon; All Ages; ~800 words. Fitz and Brandon, right after the final Domino vid. Fluff, basically. (on ao3)

Rosemary for Remembrance. 7/2013. Stargate SG-1; Vala Mal Doran/Daniel Jackson; Teen; ~2400 words. It comes every morning, relentless and remorseless, hovering just at the point where sleeping meets waking. A moment of temptation when, if she wants, she can use her senses as if they were still her own. Vala after the events of Continuum. Written for the five-year anniversary of Continuum.(on ao3)

I'm not going to bother with the questions because it's a lot less fun with only three things to choose from.

That being said, I was pleased with Rosemary for Remembrance because hey, I actually finished something that could be classified as Daniel/Vala, because while I loved them on screen, I've always run into a brick wall when I tried to get them into words myself. And I love Vala and all her many complicated sides.

Postcards from home is just a tiny ficlet but it is nice occasionally to prove to myself I can write something that isn't related to Stargate. :)

And Larks is my favorite thing I've written. Not necessarily the best, but my own personal favorite. I got my head good and stuck in the fic-verse and couldn't write much of anything else for a while afterwards, lol.

And I think that is all!

Fic first lines meme! Most recently seen with [personal profile] ziparumpazoo. This was both hilarious and cringe-inducing. Oh, man, do I struggle with fic openings. I think this is 20 of them, arranged into self-mocking helpful categories. *g*

abandon all hope and all that jazz )

I want to see other people's now so that I can learn to do it better. You know you want tooooooooo.

Tangentially, coming back to fanfic after spending a while reading novels instead is an exercise in "omg the present tense everywhere I cannot grok!!!" Which is not to say I do not love present tense - because I do, or I would not write so much of it, lol - but going from past tense mostly in first person (seriously, is every new novel written in first person now?) to third person present requires a non-trivial mental shift, apparently.

Requisite end-of-year fic roundup.

2012 fic list

What's Next. 2/2012. Stargate SG-1/The West Wing; various characters and pairings; Teen; ~4000 words. Five conversations about the Stargate Program that happened at the White House. (on ao3)

Theme and Variations. 3/2012. Fringe; Ella, with Olivia, Rachel, Peter, Astrid, Walter, and a handful of others; Teen; ~11,000 words. Five times Ella Dunham said goodbye. (on ao3)

On the Bridge at Midnight. 6/2012. Fringe; Phillip Broyles and Nina Sharp; Teen; ~850 words. Two old soldiers in a brave new world. (on ao3)

Once and Future. 8/2012. Stargate SG-1; Hailey and Satterfield; Teen; ~500 words. A passing moment in the greater history of Stargate Command. (on ao3)

Sesquicentennial. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack friendship/UST; All Ages; ~550 words. "Carter, are you sure we’re up high enough? I’m really not in the mood to go swimming today." (on ao3)

Fading Light. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack UST; Teen; ~900 words. Missing scene from Secrets, before Sam, Jack, and Hammond go back to the SGC. (on ao3)

Castles in the Sky. 9/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Mature; ~900 words. Touching her still seems like a dream sometimes. (on ao3)

Nine Lives or Thereabouts. 11/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; All Ages; ~900 words. Is that an alien living in their house, maybe? (on ao3)

The Preservation of Cultural Heritage. 12/2012. Fringe; Astrid Farnsworth and Walter Bishop; All Ages; ~700 words. The first box arrives on Wednesday afternoon. (on ao3)

Look Again Into Your Heart. 12/2012. Stargate SG-1; Sam/Jack; Mature; ~7000 words. It's not that cold, not by the standard of some of the places she's been in the last decade or so of her life, but then again, she's not used to braving the weather in heels and an evening dress. (on ao3)

I also did that three-sentence meme that was floating around for a while, and discovered that mostly I have some trouble counting to three. Teal'c and Vala, Sam/Jack, Castle/Beckett, Vala and Olivia Dunham, Daniel and Vala. What's with all the Vala in the prompts, you guys? *g*

And I posted this little bit of commentfic (Jack O'Neill and Charlie Kawalsky, pre-series) that was meant to be part of a larger five-things sort of story that I've basically abandoned. It needs the context of the other things to be less … abrasive, I think, so I haven't put it up anywhere else. But I like it for the Jack and Kawalsky banter. (Though there is a place where two sentences got munged together somehow and some other stuff that I didn't notice till it was too late to edit. So just ignore all that, lol.)

Undusting the writing brain. Also, y'all, I have been chasing down my Stargate muse. I may have actually seen her around once or twice recently. Tumblr is like chocolate for muses (and also like a rabbit hole I get lost down occasionally, but that's a different story). So many pretty gifs and pictures and now I have had to rewatch bits of several season 4 episodes and I am in over my head in flaily flaily Sam/Jack glee completely out of nowhere. No words to speak of yet, but hey, who knows!

Anyway. I think I saw this one most recently with [livejournal.com profile] anr.

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I'll give you between one and three sentences from that story.

Just stick with the pairings/people you know I'll actually write, pretty please. *g*

Because I actually posted enough fic this year to bother. Barely, and only because of a strong fourth quarter effort. ;)

Hah. I am calling my eons-old timestamp meme done after this (but only because [livejournal.com profile] a_loquita let me off the hook for one of her prompts way back when). This one was for [livejournal.com profile] silerswench's request for something the next day after The Embers Burn On, with Jack making excuses to the politicians he dissed the night before. I ... kind of hit near the prompt, but not exactly right on the bullseye. :)

Title: Generally Speaking
Rating: All Ages
Characters/Pairing: Jack
Season/Episode: Season 9/10
Word Count: ~500

Summary: The next day, in the Pentagon .... Timestamp meme sequel to The Embers Burn On.

See, someday I might finish that timestamp meme after all. This is for [livejournal.com profile] supplyship, who asked for something after A Cappella, set after the episode Line in the Sand. Though you don't really have to read the first fic to understand this one at all, so possibly I failed the point of the meme? *g*

Title: Tune Without Words
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Rating: All Ages
Characters/Pairing: Sam/Jack
Season/Episode: Post-ep for 10x12, Line in the Sand
Word Count: ~1300
Summary: Somehow, Jack thought he'd know when she opened her eyes. Loosely, a sequel for A Cappella, set after the episode Line in the Sand.

A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ziparumpazoo for shoving me in the right direction on this after I'd sat on it for too long. Also for beta reading. :)

I have a few things I really need to admit are not ever going to get finished so I can get them off my hard drive. Here is one of them!

So, eons ago I posted a timestamp meme because I wanted to make a_loquita do one too, and managed to do some of the prompts but left several hanging out there incomplete. Mostly they were trying to be more story than they were supposed to be (it was a timestamp meme!!) but all of them ran into some snag or other. This particular request was by [livejournal.com profile] codo1019, for something after A Cappella. Which, by the way, is the first fic I ever finished and posted anywhere, and I might be a teensy bit neurotic about it. Like, I can't actually make myself re-read it, which makes writing a timestamp meme response for it kind of complicated. *g* No, seriously, I just tried to make this one into a longer story when it really wasn't meant to be, so I am posting this snippet and calling it done.

The Silence after the Song
Sam/Jack, Angst, UST, not at all my usual fluff.

The colonel catches her in the parking lot... )
mrspollifax: (sam fanfic)
So wayyyyyyy back before the end-of-year holidays, [livejournal.com profile] ziparumpazoo was asking people this question; and since a) I didn't write enough in 2010 to merit doing a fic-year-in-review post, and b) I am really curious about other people's answers (with the added benefit that it might give me a shortcut to catching up on some of the fic I know I have missed *g*), I am declaring it a meme and answering it here.

What are, in your opinion, your three best pieces of work? Not the most popular, or the most fun to write, but the three stories you've written that, once finished, you've stepped back and thought that yes, this is exactly how it was supposed to turn out?

So, here are mine:

click here for navel pondering )

Anyone else want to give it a go for their fic list?

--

In a similar vein I've been thinking about making up an 'interview yourself about your WIPs' meme ... e.g., 'What's the oldest WIP on your current hard drive?' and/or similar questions. Usually I have the slightly-superstitious attitude that if I talk about my WIPs in public it is absolutely sure to kill them, but since they aren't getting finished anyway, maybe I've got it backwards? Hee. But the problem is that I can't seem to make up my mind if what I am looking for is a motivational intervention or an exorcism. Maybe what I really need is a finish-a-ficathon. Or possibly a ficamnesty day? Hmm.

Book meme! I actually did this the other day but hadn't gotten around to posting it yet. Seen a bunch of places.

meme here! )

In things totally unrelated, last night I started trying to bring some order to the chaos that is the fic-writing portion of my hard drive. It's less that the folders aren't organized – I have a system, although I suspect it wouldn't look like a system to anyone but me, and I usually follow it, except when I'm in a hurry to save something – and more that I have so many unfinished fics and bits of fic that when I'm feeling uninspired, I just bounce around from one unfinished project to the next and basically make no progress.

Anyway, now I have a spreadsheet! With word counts and notes and file links and copious self-snarking and blaming of other people, hehe. It already has an intimidating amount of entries, and I'm not actually done adding stuff yet, but it is much easier now to navigate the jungle. *feels accomplished*

(Also I am not starting anything new until I finish some of these, or at least consign a few of them to the folder of death. I am not.)

Someday I will write serious fic again. Really. That day is not today, though. :)

So, timestamp meme response #4:

For [livejournal.com profile] a_loquita, whose prompt was 'I Tell You What, Let's Change the Subject, the next day, Jack and Siler'. Original fic here.

Title: A Good Retreat
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Sam/Jack
Word Count: ~1800
Summary: It really shouldn't bother him, Jack told himself. Major generals in the USAF, retired or otherwise, weren't intimidated by mere colonels - even the hot, world-saving genius variety - and definitely not by sergeants of any stripe.
Categories: Humor. Fluff.
